Marcos’ good run at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships came to an end on Saturday in Tokyo as he was beaten by Japanese No. 1 Kei Nishikori, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals.
Marcos won just 10 points on Nishikori’s serve and was unable to create any break point opportunities. The 22-year-old Nishikori has been in inspired form in his home tournament this week, taking out second seed Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals, and broke Marcos on four occasions to claim victory in 61 minutes.
“Kei got off to a good start and it was difficult to come back into the match,” said Marcos. “But I am very happy with my week here and really enjoyed being in Tokyo. I look forward to returning to see my Japanese fans in the future.”
Marcos will now look to continue his good form at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, which begins on Sunday. It is an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament where three of the world’s Top 4 players are in action.
In the first round, Marcos has drawn Italian Fabio Fognini and in the second round could face Canadian Milos Raonic, who advanced Saturday to face Kei Nishikori in the Tokyo final. Check out the full draw here.
