Marcos will open his campaign at the Medibank International on Monday against Australian wild card, Nick Lindahl.
At the draw ceremony on Saturday, Marcos confessed to knowing little about his No. 251-ranked opponent: “[Nick] Lindahl is not familiar to me, but I will have to be careful and just do my best. I hope to do well in Sydney this year.”
The 21-year-old Lindahl has won just one ATP World Tour-level match in his four-year career, defeating Sam Querrey to reach the second round of the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok in 2007. The Swedish-born Australian recently won the domestic Australian Open wild card play-off tournament with victory over Bernard Tomic and is eager to impress ahead of his appearance at Melbourne Park:
”I feel like I have definitely earned my spot in the [Sydney] draw after the Australian Open wild card play-off,” Lindahl said. “It means the world to me that the selectors believe in me and have given me this opportunity. I will certainly be making the most of it.”
Playing against one of the home favourites, Marcos’ first-round match will be played out on the Ken Rosewall Arena Monday. Play begins at 11 a.m. local time (12 a.m. GMT, 2 a.m. Cyprus) with Marcos third on court following a men’s singles match and a ladies’ singles match.
