Marcos was beaten in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday in Cincinnati, falling victim to 22 aces in a 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Canadian Milos Raonic.
Marcos clinched a tight first set in the tie-break, converting his fourth set point as Raonic hit long with a backhand. However, Raonic struck back with a service break at the start of the second set to level the match, while Marcos needed treatment on a lower back injury from the trainer.
Marcos had his chances in the third set. He was denied on a break point at 3-4 courtesy of a second-serve ace from the 6’5’’ Raonic, and paid the price as he then surrendered serve in the ninth game by pulling a forehand wide at 30/40. He had an opportunity to draw level as Raonic served for the match, but could not convert and the 21 year old claimed victory in two hours and 15 minutes.
Marcos will complete his US Open preparations at next week’s Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University.
