Sixth seed Sam Querrey edged out Marcos in a thrilling first round encounter at the SAP Open in San Jose on Wednesday. The American recorded his second victory over Marcos by a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(5) score line.
Marcos looked set to secure the victory as he held a 4-0 advantage in the third set tie-break, however Querrey worked his way back to 4-4 and went on to steal the win after one hour and 58 minutes by claiming the final three points.
World No. 34 Querrey, who has spent a lot of time in the off-season working on his fitness, fired 16 aces in the encounter and took both break point opportunities he created on Marcos’ serve. Meanwhile, Marcos was less successful at converting break points - only succeeding on two of seven - and had a low first serve conversion rate of 48 per cent.
Marcos next will focus on the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis – an ATP World Tour 500 event that begins on Monday.
