Marcos has a mighty challenge on his hands on Wednesday, that of attempting to be the player to snap World No. 1 Rafael Nadal’s 34-match winning streak on clay and knock the defending champion out of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The pair meets in the second round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament in Madrid and Marcos will go into the match with the confidence of having beaten the Spaniard in their last meeting in Cincinnati last year.
Nadal is unbeaten on clay since Roland Garros 2009, when he lost to Robin Soderling in the fourth round. Last year the Mallorcan completed a historic sweep of the European clay-court season, claiming all three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court events before triumphing at Roland Garros.
The 24 year old has started the 2011 clay-court swing in the same vein, winning a seventh straight title in Monte-Carlo before winning the Barcelona crown for a sixth time. Can Marcos be the one to end his run?
