Cyprus is through to the third round of the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Group II after Marcos rallied from a set down to defeat Ireland’s Conor Niland 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 to give the hosts an unassailable 3-1 lead.
"I am really proud playing in front of such a crowd," said Marcos. "They were great and I express my thanks to all the people who came out here to support me. I think once more I did not play very well today, however, I found the solutions needed to make me win and secure the victory for our team.
"It is one of the best moments playing Davis Cup for my country. I express also my gratitude to all the other members of the team. We made a huge step towards the dream, our entrance in the first category of the Davis Cup in September."
It has been a sensational effort this weekend from Marcos, who battled pain in his knee and foot to fight past Louk Sorensen in five sets to win the first rubber on Friday before teaming up with Photos Kallias to win the crucial doubles rubber on Saturday.
Cyprus goes on to face Finland, who defeated Monaco 3-2, with the winning nation to be promoted to Group I in 2010. The tie will be played from 18-20 September.
Well done Marcos and Team Cyprus!
