Marcos closed out his competitive preparation for the Australian Open in the best possible way as he scored a big win over Marin Cilic at the AAMI Classic in Kooyong on Friday, defeating the Croatian 6-3, 6-2.
Marcos, who took a lot of confidence from his first win of the season against Ivan Ljubicic on Thursday, will take even more heart from victory over the 20th-ranked Cilic - who was the champion at the Chennai Open last week.
The victory came as the draw for the 2009 Australian Open was made. In the first round, the unseeded Marcos has been drawn to face Frenchman Julien Benneteau, with the prospect of facing either No. 16 seed Robin Soderling or Robert Kendrick in the second round.
Marcos is in a challenging part of the draw, which could feature 23rd seed Mardy Fish in the third round and possibly defending champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round.
