Marcos registered his first clay-court match win in nearly three years, since Roland Garros 2012, defeating Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy.
Competing in his first match on the surface this year, Marcos saved all seven break points faced and won 74 per cent of first serve points to prevail in one hour and 25 minutes. He improved his head-to-head record to 3-1 against the Belgian.
Marcos will next face fifth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the Bucharest second round on Wednesday. The match is second on Central, with play beginning at 12:00pm noon. The pair squared off in the semi-finals in Zagreb earlier this year, with Garcia-Lopez claiming victory 6-4, 6-4.
Marcos is seeking to reach the fifth clay-court quarter-final of his career on the ATP World Tour and first since advancing as far in Munich 2012.
