Marcos was back in action on Tuesday at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, emerging with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Vasek Pospisil.
In his first match in one month, Marcos showed little signs of rust, converting on six of 12 break points against the Canadian. Despite being broken when serving for the first set at 5-4, he rebounded nicely in breaking right back and serving out the opener to love at 7-5. Marcos would storm back in the second set after falling behind 0-3, reeling off seven of the next nine games to seal the victory after one hour and 45 minutes.
In his first appearance in Cincinnati since 2013, Marcos improved to 3-1 against Pospisil. He will seek to pull the upset over ninth seed Gael Monfils next, with a coveted spot in the third round on the line at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event. It will be their third head-to-head encounter and first in nine years. Marcos prevailed in Cincinnati in 2006 and Monfils earned a four-set win at the 2007 Australian Open.
