Marcos has been drawn against Alberto Montanes in the first round of The Championships, Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Marcos is in the bottom half of the draw with home favourite Andy Murray and former champion Rafael Nadal. Therefore, it is expected that Marcos will play on Tuesday.
Marcos has a good record at SW19. He reached the semi-finals in 2006, beating Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt on route to losing against Rafael Nadal. In 2011, Marcos ran close Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion and entertained the crowd with his daring play.
Marcos’ first round opponent is ranked 89 in the South African Airway ATP Rankings. The head-to-head record is currently tied, with both players having won once against each other. Montanes had his best result at Wimbledon in 2010, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the third round. Last year, he lost to Andreas Seppi in the first round.
If Marcos wins against Montanes, he will play either Grigor Dimitrov or 32nd seed Kevin Anderson. A potential tie with Andy Murray awaits the winner in the third round.
