Marcos will open his Roland Garros campaign against Argentine Juan Monaco on Court 7 on Tuesday.

World No. 68 Monaco has had a strong start to the season, compiling a 20-12 match record. The Tandil native reached his seventh ATP World Tour final on clay in Buenos Aires, where he finished runner-up to Tommy Robredo, and was a quarter-finalist at clay-court tournaments in Vina del Mar (l. to Gonzalez) and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Rome – where he defeated World No. 4 Andy Murray in the second round before later losing to Fernando Gonzalez.

In their first meeting, Marcos will be hoping to hand the 25-year-old Monaco his third first-round exit at Roland Garros. Monaco previously fell at the first hurdle in 2005 (l. to Grosjean) and last year (l. to Soderling). His best result in came in 2007, when he reached the fourth round (l. to Canas) – his joint-best Grand Slam performance.

Marcos comes into Roland Garros with an 11-8 match record in 2009 and, despite not having won an official match on clay this season, will come into the first-round match with some confidence after comprehensively beating 2008 Roland Garros semi-finalist Gael Monfils in an exhibition match in Paris last week. Like Monaco, Marcos’ best result at Roland Garros was a fourth-round showing in 2007 (l. to Andreev).

The first-round encounter will also mark Marcos’ first match under new coach Eduardo Infantino, who previously worked with Juan Martin del Potro and David Nalbandian.

The match will take place third on Court 7, with play having begun at 11 a.m. CET this morning. The have been interruptions due to rain, so Marcos may take to court a little later than expected.
