Marcos will open his grass-court campaign at next week’s Gerry Weber Open in Halle. Marcos left for Germany on Friday, with the ATP World Tour 250 grass-court tournament starting on Monday.
Marcos comes into Halle hunting for his first ATP World Tour-level win since reaching the Rotterdam quarter-finals in February. He has enjoyed success in Halle in the past, finishing runner-up to Tomas Berdych in the 2007 final.
In the first round of the 2013 edition, Marcos will face Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis. World No. 40 Gulbis won the Delray Beach title in February and has had good results during the clay-court swing. Marcos has a 4-1 career lead over Gulbis, including winning their one previous grass-court meeting six years ago at Wimbledon.
Also competing in Halle are Roger Federer, Richard Gasquet, Tommy Haas, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic. Should Marcos beat Gulbis, he would face the third-seeded Haas, and has a projected quarter-final clash with Raonic.
