Marcos advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over 15th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in Indian Wells.
Marcos squandered an early break lead in the first set, but immediately regained it in the sixth game, forcing a volley error from Lopez as he guided a backhand low to the Spaniard’s feet. He then served out the first set as Lopez fired a forehand wide.
Consistent play from Marcos in the second set kept Lopez under pressure and his resistance cracked in the fifth game as an unforced error cost him a break of serve. Marcos held his nerve to serve out victory on his third match point in the 10th game, claiming the win in 70 minutes.
In the third round, Marcos will face Ukrainian No. 21 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, who defeated Belgium’s Steve Darcis 6-7(13), 6-3, 7-5.
