Marcos is through to the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after cruising past American Ryan Sweeting 6-4, 6-2 on Monday.
Breaks were exchanged in the first set before Marcos broke decisively in the 10th game to clinch the opener. He then raced away with the second set, winning 80 per cent of points behind his first serve and converting both his break point chances to wrap up victory in 71 minutes.
“I am very happy I found the way to win today,” said Marcos. “It’s very positive that I am very consistent the last month or two. I am going to keep pushing this way and I am sure I will win more and more matches.”
Victory takes Marcos back to winning ways on the singles court after successive first-round losses in Shanghai (against Andy Murray) and Stockholm (against Milos Raonic). Before that he had reached the final of the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, finishing runner-up to Janko Tipsarevic.
He is playing in Vienna for the fourth time, with his best showing a quarter-final effort last year, and goes on to face sixth seed Kevin Anderson, who defeated 2010 runner-up Andreas Haider-Maurer in straight sets.
