Marcos sprung the upset of the tournament, ousting top seed David Ferrer 6-2, 7-6(4) to advance to the third round at the Aegon Open Nottingham.
Marcos got off to a roaring start, breaking the Spaniard in the opening game of the match and once again in the third game. He would consolidate for 4-0 and eventually grabbed the opener 6-2 in under 40 minutes. Neither player would secure a break of serve in the second set, which was decided in a tie-break. Marcos would claim victory on his first match point after one hour and 30 minutes. He fired nine aces and staved off both break points faced, while claiming 82 per cent of first serve points.
The win was Marcos' 20th against Top 10 opposition, defeating World No. 7 Ferrer for the second time in their head-to-head series. He previously earned a five-set victory at the 2010 Australian Open.
In addition, Marcos defeated the top seed at an ATP World Tour event for the seventh time in his career. In 2015, he also overcame top seed Ivo Karlovic en route to the Zagreb semi-finals.
Marcos' next opponent will be 18 year old rising star Alexander Zverev. Zverev is the youngest player in the Top 100 of the Emirates ATP Rankings and recently won the ATP Challneger Tour title on home soil in Heilbronn, Germany. With a quarter-final berth in Nottingham on the line, the match is slated for Wednesday. Time and court to be determined.
