Marcos turned aside American Sam Querrey 7-6(2), 6-1 to advance to the second round at the If Stockholm Open on Tuesday. He fired seven aces and won 82 percent of first serve points, while converting on two of three break chances.
Marcos improved to 8-3 in Stockholm with the win, having tasted victory on the indoor hard courts back in 2009 when he did not drop a set en route to one of his four ATP World Tour titles. Tuesday's win marked Marcos' first against Querrey in four head-to-head meetings. It was their first encounter since 2009.
Marcos secured the victory after one hour and 17 minutes, racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set tie-break and then breaking immediately at the start of the second set. He would break again for 5-1 and served out the match a game later.
Marcos will look to pull double duty on Wednesday, when he contests his second round match against Australia's Bernard Tomic - their first meeting - and plays his doubles opener alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis later in the day. They face Wimbledon semifinalists Jonathan Erlich and Philipp Petzschner.
