Exactly 14 years ago, Marcos opened his Grand Slam career at the US Open. He would advance to the second round as a qualifier, where he fell to Roger Federer in four sets.
Now, Marcos is back in New York and ready to kick off his 13th appearance at the hard-court major. Two years removed from a stunning Round of 16 result, a personal best, he will once again look to replicate that magic.
It will be a match-up of ATP veterans when Marcos opens against 36-year-old Mikhail Youzhny. It will be their eighth head-to-head encounter, split four wins apiece. It marks the third time they have met at a Grand Slam, with their very first encounter coming at Wimbledon in 2005 and their most recent meeting at the 2017 Australian Open.
A potential second round match-up with 17th seed Lucas Pouille or qualifier Yannick Maden awaits. Also in Marcos' section of the draw is Pablo Carreno Busta, a semifinalist last year, and former World No. 1 and two-time champion Novak Djokovic. Carreno Busta would be a third round opponent, while Djokovic potentially looms large in the Round of 16.
Marcos will open his quest against Youzhny on Tuesday. The schedule will be released on Monday.
