Marcos needed just 53 minutes to book his place in the second round of the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur 2010 on Tuesday, dismissing Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-1 at the ATP World Tour 250 indoor hard-court tournament.
In a dominant serving display from Marcos, he won 23 of 26 points behind his first serve, including eight aces, and saved all three break points he faced. He was ruthlessly efficient on his No. 123-ranked opponent’s serve, converting five of six break points.
“It was a great match,” said Marcos. “I played really good tennis. I’m happy with the way I played and I’m happy I won. Nishikori is a very talented player; he had a good run at the US Open, he’s beaten some good players this year. But I played really well and didn’t give him any chances and I’m very happy about that.”
In the second round on Wednesday, Marcos will face Colombian Santiago Giraldo, who defeated Michal Przysiezny in straight sets on Monday. It will be Marcos’ first meeting with the 22-year-old Bogota resident.

World No. 62 Giraldo’s first-round win marked his first ATP World Tour-level victory since July, when he defeated Alexander Peya to reach the second round in Newport. The right-hander, who has reached two ATP World Tour quarter-finals this year, is coming off a strong showing in Davis Cup for Colombia against the United States, defeating No. 21 Sam Querrey before losing a heart-breaking five-set battle with Mardy Fish to surrender the World Group play-off tie for Colombia.
