Marcos is through to the second round of the Brisbane International after defeating American teenager Ryan Harrison 7-6(7), 6-2 on Monday night at the ATP World Tour 250 hard-court tournament,
Marcos recovered from a 0/40 deficit in the 11th game of the first set and saved a set point at 5-6 in the tie-break before clinching the opener with aggressive play on his second set point opportunity. He quickly established a 4-1 lead in the second set, and while Harrison was able to recoup one of the breaks, Marcos held on to close out victory in one hour and 41 minutes.

“I’m very pleased [to advance] and surprised with the quality of tennis I played,” admitted Marcos. “I have some things to work on for sure. The first serve was not working very well percentage-wise. I had a lot of unforced errors, not a lot of winners. But I’m happy, first match of the year you don’t feel that well. I fought very well and that’s very positive.
“In the tie-break I played very aggressive and it paid off. I think that was the key of the match, to win the important points, and I played them really, really well.”
Marcos goes onto face either Japan’s Kei Nishikori, the No. 5 seed, or Germany’s Cedrik-Marcel Stebe for a place in the quarter-finals.
