Marcos overcame a 0-3 head-to-head record to defeat Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-4 on Friday in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
In beating Chardy for the first time in four meetings, Marcos broke serve twice from eight opportunities and claimed victory in 80 minutes.
Marcos goes onto face 15th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the second round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 hard-court tournament. He is also in the doubles competition, pairing up with last year’s Wimbledon doubles champion Jurgen Melzer. They face Americans John Isner and Sam Querrey in the first round.
Marcos reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells on his debut six years ago and beat then-World No. 1 Roger Federer two years ago to reach the fourth round.
