Marcos advanced to the second round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in impressive style on Sunday night, recording his first-ever win over World No. 12 Marin Cilic 6-4, 7-5 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
Marcos crucially saved six of seven break points in the match, while capitalising on three of the four opportunities he created on Cilic’s serve. He lost only four points behind his first serve as he sealed victory in one hour and 46 minutes over the No. 11 seed.
“I knew I had to be more aggressive," said Marcos, who had lost to Cilic in their two previous meetings. "I felt like I was hitting the ball pretty steady.''
For a place in the third round Marcos will face either Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci or German qualifier Benjamin Becker.
