Marcos' run at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships has come to an end at the hands of Jeremy Chardy. In a tight encounter on Friday, the seventh seed prevailed 7-6(7), 7-6(3) to reach the semi-finals.
Marcos fought back well from a 2-5 deficit in the first set to force a tie-break. However, he could not quite complete the come back and Chardy took the tie-break 9-7 to earn a one-set lead.
Breaks were exchanged in the second set before a second tie-break was called on to decide the two players. Chardy’s big serving and powerful ground strokes proved too much for Marcos to handle though and the Frenchman clinched victory after one hour and 49 minutes of intense play.
It was a great effort by Marcos against Chardy, who is currently ranked a career-high No. 52 largely due to reaching his first ATP World Tour final at Johannesburg recently.
Marcos will now return to Cyprus to prepare for his country’s important Davis Cup clash against Portugal to be played in Nicosia from 6-8 March.
Go, Marcos!
