Marcos was forced to save three break points in his opening service game before steadying and eventually forcing a tie-break. At 6-5, Marcos read the first serve of John Isner and got the ball back in play, prompting a forehand error from the American and earning him the first set.
Unforced errors proved costly for Marcos in the seventh game of the second set and a double fault on break point gave Isner a crucial 4-3 lead, which he used to level the match. Isner then broke through at the same stage in the third set, breaking Marcos to love in the seventh game before serving out victory in one hour and 56 minutes.
After an encouraging week in Washington, Marcos will now compete at the Coupe Rogers in Montreal, which begins on Monday. Marcos has been drawn to face Italian No. 13 seed Fabio Fognini in the first round and is in the same section of the draw as No. 2 seed Andy Murray, sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro, 11th seed Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Ernests Gulbis.
