After a thrilling second round win over Robin Soderling, Marcos will be looking to build on his momentum as he takes on American No. 23 seed Mardy Fish for a place in the Australian Open last 16 on Friday.
Getting to know…Mardy Fish
Not only is Fish a pretty catchy name for journalists to play around with, he's a rather decent tennis player as well. Currently ranked 24th in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings, the American didn't have the best start to the season - opening with two first round losses at the Brisbane International and the Medibank International in Sydney. However, he got off the mark for the season with relatively comfortable victories over Samuel Groth and Simone Bolelli in the first two rounds in Melbourne.
The 27 year old from Tampa was a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open in 2007, when he lost to compatriot Andy Roddick. Last year on the ATP World Tour, Fish was runner-up at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells – where he lost to Novak Djokovic – and also at New Haven, losing to first-time winner Marin Cilic on that occasion.
Head-to-Head
This will be Marcos’ first clash against Fish. However he does have a 7-4 career record against Americans in completed matches on the ATP World Tour.
Fans cheer for Marcos during his win over Soderling.
When and Where?
The match will be played under the lights on Hisense Arena. With a women’s singles match featuring Ana Ivanovic beginning at 19:30 local time, Marcos will likely take to the court at around 21:00 – which is a little more civilised for those of us following from Europe. If you're going to be there - make sure you make plenty of noise!
