Marcos was left disappointed after a gruelling effort ended in defeat at the Sony Ericsson Open on Saturday as he was beaten 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the second round by Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus.
Marcos failed to find his best tennis and was hindered by a lack of rhythm on his serve, which saw him commit seven double faults and find only 42 per cent first serves. His fighting spirit and perseverance nearly carried him through, as he led by a break in the third set, but he could not maintain the advantage and Rochus hit back to claim victory in two hours and 11 minutes.
Marcos will now have a couple of weeks to recoup from what has been a disappointing trip to the USA, before starting afresh on the clay in Monte-Carlo.
