Marcos is through to the second round of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships after a 7-5, 6-2 victory over third seed Ernests Gulbis of Latvia on Tuesday evening.
Marcos’ serve was particularly potent in the match as he fired 13 aces and won 25 of 30 points when he connected on his first serve. Despite losing serve once, he was able to convert four of 10 break point chances that he created on Gulbis’ serve to wrap up the victory in 73 minutes.
“You've seen Rocky, no?” joked Marcos after the win. “You just have to be smart. I know he was going to be hitting the ball very hard but I also know he can make big mistakes.
“Every year it seems there are two or three new guys, tall, huge, just serving. It's tough. It's becoming a really tough sport and that's what is so nice about it.”
Next up for Marcos is Israel’s Dudi Sela, who advanced through the first round when Philipp Petzschner retired with a left wrist injury. That match will be on Thursday.
Stay tuned for more.
Go, Marcos!
