Marcos made a strong start to his Roland Garros campaign on Monday in Paris as he dismissed Portugal’s Frederico Gil 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the clay-court Grand Slam.

The No. 27 seed trailed by an early break of serve, but worked hard to draw level in the eighth game and went on to take the first set on a tie-break, having been denied on two set point chances in the 12th game.

Marcos capitalised on his momentum and broke at the beginning of the second set. From there it was one-way traffic as Marcos broke serve four times in the final two sets to claim victory in two hours and 24 minutes. In a dominant performance, Marcos hit 36 winners to 26 unforced errors and saved nine of the 10 break points he faced.

In the second round Marcos will face Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, who came from a set down to defeat Dustin Brown 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-2 earlier in the day.
