Marcos was forced to retire with a right shoulder injury in his third-round clash with Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open on Saturday evening in Melbourne. Hewitt was leading 6-0, 4-2.
While Hewitt played to a very-high level for the time they were on court, Marcos was clearly hampered with the pain in his right shoulder and afterwards explained:
“I just couldn’t hit the forehand. I couldn't control the ball. I was pushing the ball. I wasn't serving over 200 kilometres per hour. I was feeling the pain when I wanted to hit the ball on the impact. When you do that, then you stop moving. Everything goes wrong because you're just thinking about the pain and not the forehand and the serve.”
Marcos also confirmed that he will have an MRI scan tomorrow to determine the exact nature of the injury, which is located in the tendons on his bicep.
While it is a very disappointing end to Marcos’ Australian Open campaign, he can take heart from the level of his performances during his three weeks Down Under – highlighted by capturing the Medibank International Sydney title and rallying from two sets and a break down to knock out No. 17 seed David Ferrer in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
