Buoyed on by his passionate supporters, Marcos put in a tremendous effort to defeat Swedish No. 16 seed Robin Soderling 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 and reach the third round at the Australian Open on Wednesday.
After initially trailing 6-3, 4-1 in the match, Marcos turned it around with terrific spirit and was cheered on in every point by his flag-waving army of Greek-Cypriot supporters, who accounted for a large part of the vociferous crowd on Show Court 2.
After winning six of the next seven games to level the match at one set all, Marcos was quick to capitalise on his momentum and, despite surrendering an early break in the third set, quickly regained his advantage to go on and take the two-sets-to-one lead.
Unstoppable with his cheering supporters roaring him on, Marcos broke twice in the fourth set to take the victory and fell to his knees in front of his fans to salute them after a match that had lasted just two minutes shy of three hours.
Marcos’ terrific effort will be rewarded by a third round clash with American No. 23 seed Mardy Fish, whom he has never played before.
Stay tuned for a look ahead to the third round.
Well done, Marcos!
