Marcos was beaten in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday, falling to Spanish clay-court veteran Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-2.
Marcos made an impressive start, racing to a 4-1 lead against the recent Casablanca champion Robredo. But the former World No. 5 Robredo, a winner of 10 clay-court titles, came back strongly and lost only two more games as he raced to victory in 80 minutes.
Marcos arrived in Madrid on Sunday, fresh from finishing runner-up in the doubles competition at the BMW Open in Munich. He will now travel to Rome for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, another ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court tournament.
