Marcos Falls To Granollers

Marcos Baghdatis

Marcos’ comeback was cut short in Basel as he lost in the first round to Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Marcos made a bright start to the match, breaking early to lead 2-0. However Houston titlist Granollers hit back and reeled off six straight games to take a one set lead.

As the match approached a crunch stage, deep in the second set, Marcos rose to the occasion, improving his level and creating break points on the Granollers serve. The pressure eventually told and he roared with delight as Granollers netted a backhand on Marcos’ second set point at 4-5.

Unfortunately, Marcos was not able to capitalize on his momentum and Granollers broke early in the third set to lead 2-0. Despite much support for Marcos from the Swiss crowd, Granollers did not falter and broke through again in the seventh game with a forehand pass to lead 5-2. The Spaniard went on to close out victory with a love service game.

Ever-popular Marcos left the court to a rapturous reception from the Basel crowd. He’ll be back in action next week at ATP Masters Series Paris.
