Marcos Excited For Fognini Clash

Monday, 05 August, 2013

After a successful week in Washington, where he opened his summer hard court campaign with a quarter-final showing at the Citi Open, Marcos is due to face Fabio Fognini in the first round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Tuesday.

Marcos’ Washington campaign was ended in three sets by the in-form Isner, who went on to finish runner-up to Juan Martin del Potro in the final. “I had three good matches: won two, lost one,” said Marcos. “I played really good and had lots of positives there. I'm playing very good and feeling great.

“It's tough to play Isner, you get no rhythm. Slowly, slowly I started to lose mine. I cannot say that I played good or bad. I was never in the zone against him. Everything goes so fast. But I played two great matches.”

Marcos faces another dangerous player in World No. 16 Fognini. Since Wimbledon the Italian has been in career-best form. He won his first two ATP World Tour titles in Stuttgart and Hamburg before reaching a third final in Umag.

Speaking from Montreal on Monday, Marcos acknowledged the threat that Fognini poses, but is confident he can trouble the Italian with his aggressive play. “The courts are slower in Montreal and the conditions are cooler. But it's another tournament and I'm feeling good.

“I play Fognini tomorrow. It will be tough match, a tough fight, but I'm looking forward to it. I'll just continue the way I've been playing, aggressive tennis, and try to find a way to win. He's been playing great and in a good way since Wimbledon. It's great for him. It will be a tough match tomorrow, but I'm confident after my three good matches last week.

“I enjoy this part of the season. It's nice and hot, and the courts are faster after coming from clay and grass. It's fun and I like it.”

The match is scheduled for second on Court 9, following a 12noon start (GMT-4hrs).
