Marcos held his nerve for a battling 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) win over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday night in the second round of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami.
Advancing in two hours and 15 minutes, Marcos recorded his fifth victory in seven meetings with Kohlschreiber as he won just six points more than his German opponent, who was seeded 24th. After dropping serve twice to lose the opener, Marcos tightened up on serve to claim the second set, winning 81 per cent of his service points. Breaks were exchanged in the decider, before Marcos once again prevailed in the tie-break.
It is the first time this season that Marcos has won back-to-back matches. He goes on to face 11th-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round. Tsonga opened his campaign with a straight-sets win over Adrian Mannarino.
In their first meeting in 18 months, Marcos will look to overturn a 0-4 record against Tsonga. The Frenchman, who is looking to return to the Top 10 after being edged out by John Isner last week, was a finalist in Marseille in February and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open at the start of the year.
The match will be played on Sunday at Crandon Park. Stay tuned for the full order of play.
