Marcos was edged out at the quarter-final stage of the Winston-Salem Open on Thursday as he was beaten by fourth-seeded American John Isner 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Having fallen to Isner in straight sets in Montreal two weeks ago, Marcos was looking for revenge and made a strong start to the match as he broke the famed Isner serve twice and won 94 per cent of points on his own serve to clinch the opening set.
However, the in-form Isner hit back in the second set to level the match, and finished strongly in the decider, taking one of his six break point opportunities to claim victory in one hour and 51 minutes.
Marcos will not have to wait long to have another crack at beating the 6’9’’ Isner. The two will meet in the first round of the US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year, which begins on Monday in New York.
