Marcos was beaten in the second round of the Erste Bank Open on Wednesday in Vienna, falling to sixth-seeded South African Kevin Anderson 6-2, 7-6(5).
Marcos lost serve three times as he surrendered the opening set to the No. 32-ranked Anderson, who is enjoying the best season of his career, highlighted by winning his first ATP World Tour title in Johannesburg.
In a tight second set, two service breaks were exchanged before the 6’8’’ Anderson prevailed in a tie-break after one hour and 31 minutes.
“Kevin played really good in the first set; everything he did was working,” said Marcos. “I tried to fight and had my chances but didn't take them. I could have served a bit better in the end of the second set to finish it off.”
Next up for Marcos is the Swiss Indoors Basel, which begins on Monday. Marcos reached the final at the ATP World Tour 500 indoor hard-court tennis tournament in 2005, finishing runner-up to Fernando Gonzalez, and is joined in the strong field next week by Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
