Marcos claimed a milestone victory in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, earning his 20th career win at the grass-court Grand Slam.
Marcos dismissed home hope James Ward 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 40 minutes, advancing to the second round in his 12th appearance at the All England Club. He was on fire throughout the encounter, launching 35 winners, including 17 aces. Marcos did not face a break point, claiming a dominant 43 of 44 points on his first serve.
Coming off a semi-final finish at the ATP World Tour event in Antalya, Turkey, Marcos stormed out of the gates on Tuesday afternoon. He grabbed the first break for 4-3 in the first set and another deep in the second for 5-4. Marcos would break for the match in the third set, converting his fourth match point as Ward hit a volley error.
Marcos will next face either 13th seed Grigor Dimitrov or Diego Schwartzman in Thursday's second round. His lone victory over Dimitrov came at Wimbledon in 2012, while his only meeting against Schwartzman resulted in a 6-0, 6-0 rout on the clay of Houston last year.
