Marcos fell in the St. Petersburg Open second round on Thursday, losing to fifth seed Tommy Robredo 7-6(5), 6-1.
Marcos fired six aces and saved 11 of 15 break points faced, but was unable to survive a strong serving performance by his Spanish opponent. Marcos grabbed an early lead in the first set, racing to 5-3 behind a quick break of serve, but World No. 27 Robredo fought to get the break back and take the first set in a tie-break. He would eventually prevail after one hour and 25 minutes.
The head-to-head is now level at three wins apiece, with Marcos claiming their first three encounters from 2005-09 and Robredo responding with three wins from 2010-15.
Marcos will next travel to Kuala Lumpur to begin his Asian swing with the Malaysian Open. A finalist in 2011, he owns a 8-4 tournament record.
