Marcos is through to the second round of the Sony Ericsson Open after defeating Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament in Miami.
Marcos broke serve four times from six opportunities and won 80 per cent of points behind his first serve to claim his first win in three meetings with the No. 77-ranked Mayer.
Next up for Marcos is the ultimate test against World No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the second round. Marcos goes into the match looking to overturn a 0-6 career record against the Serb, but did take the first set off him in their most recent meeting in Basel last year.
Before then, though, Marcos will be in doubles action alongside American Sam Querrey. They face Australian Open champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek in the first round on Friday, with the match scheduled to take place last on Grandstand court.
