Despite falling on Sunday, Marcos will hold his head high after reaching the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in seven years. Marcos was defeated by 10th seed Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to complete his US Open campaign. It ends a strong week that saw him upset 32nd seed Benoit Paire and oust American hopeful Ryan Harrison en route to his best finish in 11 appearances in New York.
Marcos fought hard, but was unable to counter the speed of Monfils on Sunday. After taking a two-set lead, the Frenchman was broken in the second game of the third set as Marcos capitalised on a pair of double faults. But Marcos could not hold the lead, as Monfils reeled off six of the last seven games to eventually prevail after one hour and 58 minutes.
Marcos will rise to a projected World No. 36 when the new edition of the Emirates ATP Rankings are released next week. It will be his highest position since February 2013.
Marcos will next travel to the Far East for the ATP World Tour's Asian Swing. He is scheduled to play in Chengdu, Tokyo and the Masters 1000 event in Shanghai.
