Marcos’ campaign at the Australian Open came to a disappointing end on Wednesday night when he was beaten in the second round by Swiss No. 21 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-6(3), 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
Marcos made a strong start to the match, breaking serve in the first game. However, Wawrinka drew level in the 10th game and went onto clinch the opener with victory in the ensuing tie-break. Riding a wave of momentum, the Swiss then broke serve in the first game of the second set. Marcos was able to break back in the fourth game, but lost his serve to love in the ninth game as Wawrinka closed out a two-set lead.
Marcos staged a late fightback, cheered on by the vocal Margaret Court Arena fans. When Wawrinka served for the match in the 10th game of the third set, Marcos broke back and reeled off three straight games to force a fourth set. However, he could not match Wawrinka’s baseline play and the Swiss broke serve twice as he raced to victory in three hours and 10 minutes.
