Marcos suffered a close defeat in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Monday evening at the hands of Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The Spaniard prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 after a two-hour, 23-minute battle at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 clay-court event.

Playing on the blue clay at the Caja Magica for the first time, Marcos surrendered the first set as he was broken in the ninth game. He fought back well from a break down to level the match in the second set, but was broken by Garcia-Lopez in the decisive final game of the match.
