In cool conditions in south-west London, Marcos regrouped well in the third set and broke serve twice to seal victory in two hours and 19 minutes. He hit 13 aces in the encounter and won 79 per cent of points behind his first serve.
With rain at the start of the day delaying the schedule, Marcos’ planned doubles match with Jamie Murray was postponed.
In the second round on Wednesday Marcos will face Czech Lukas Rosol, who defeated Victor Hanescu in straight sets.
