Marcos snapped a four-match losing streak on Wednesday in Los Angeles as he advanced to the quarter-finals of the Farmers Classic with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over American wild card Ryan Sweeting.
It was Marcos’ first win since reaching the third round at Roland Garros. “It’s been a long time,” conceded Marcos. “I didn’t win a match on grass. It’s been two months I didn’t win a match. It’s a long time. It feels good winning a match, even without playing good. The positive attitude is there which is very important, and I’m looking forward to the next one.”
World No. 119 Sweeting punched above his weight in the first set as he broke Marcos’ serve twice to take a one-set lead. However, Marcos responded with four breaks of serve in the following two sets to seal victory in one hour and 50 minutes.
"I started out playing well in the first set," assessed Sweeting. "Then he started to serve better. I had chances in the second set to get up a break, but he came up with some good serves and he took a few steps back on my serve and that changed the whole dynamic."
Marcos is through to his fifth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season and next will face Serbian No. 6 seed Janko Tipsarevic, who progressed with a straight-sets win over Somdev Devvarman.
