Marcos is through to the second round of the Odlum Brown VanOpen after beating John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 on Tuesday night in Vancouver.
Marcos, the top seed, advanced in two hours and 18 minutes. He fired 15 aces and saved seven of the 10 break points he faced as he prevailed in his first meeting with the Australian.
Next up for Marcos will be American Chase Buchanan. The 23-year-old American is at a career-high World No. 117 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. In May he reached the final of an ATP Challenger Tour title in Karshi.
