Marcos advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Monday night as he defeated Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-3. In the one-hour, 37-minute contest, Marcos converted three of his 10 break points and won 67 per cent of points on serve.
In the second round of this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, which alternates between the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto each year, Marcos will face 10th-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic, who received a bye through the first round.
It is the first time since 2007 that Marcos has advanced past the first round at the Rogers Cup. That year in Montreal he went onto reach the third round, losing to Andy Roddick.
