A self-confessed much more confident Marcos won his first match of 2009 with a hard-fought 7-6(3), 6-4 victory over veteran Croatian Ivan Ljubicic on Thursday at the AAMI Classic in Kooyong.

“[It feels] very nice, to tell the truth, very nice [to get the win]. It feels great. Smile is back so, you know, it's a relief going into the Aussie Open, so that's the most important thing.

“Now I play two matches here, one in Brisbane (last week), I'm starting to feel good on court,” said Marcos afterwards.

Reflecting on his performance, Marcos said: “I was just being myself on court, and I think that's the most important thing, and that's all. I have four days left (before the start of the Australian Open) to work on the serve, so we will see how it goes these four days.”

Marcos has one more match to play to hone his game ahead of the Australian Open, which begins on Monday. He will face Croatia’s Marin Cilic on Friday, second on following an 11am start.

Last week’s Chennai champion and World No. 20 Cilic will be another tough test for Marcos; it will be their first meeting.
