Finland has gained promotion to the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone I group after defeating Cyprus 3-2 in Salohalli, Finland.
Cyprus trailed 1-2 overnight after losing an agonisingly close doubles encounter on Saturday, but Marcos hit back Sunday in the reverse singles to defeat Finnish No. 1 Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to send the tie into a deciding rubber.
Sadly, though, Photos Kallias could not clinch the tie for the visitors, losing to Finnish No. 2 Henri Kontinen 6-0, 7-5, 6-0.
It has been a brave campaign from Cyprus this year, with victories over Portugal and Ireland putting it within touching distance of promotion.
Along with Finland, Latvia was also promoted to Group I after defeating Slovenia 3-2 over the weekend. World No. 3 Andy Murray’s Great Britain will be among Cyprus’ potential opponents in 2010 after Britain was defeated by Poland in a Group I relegation match.
