Finland edged ahead 2-1 in its Davis Cup third-round clash with Cyprus after Jarkko Nieminen and Henri Kontinen battled back from a two-set deficit to defeat Marcos and Photos Kallias in the crucial doubles rubber 6-7(4), 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5.
Marcos must now win his reverse singles match against Finnish No. 1 Nieminen to keep alive Cyprus’ hopes of promotion to Europe/Africa Zone I. Should Marcos level the tie at 2-2, Kontinen and Kallias would go head-to-head in the final rubber to decide the tie.
Marcos and Nieminen have met five times before, including once before in Davis Cup competition in 2007 – when Marcos prevailed in straight sets. World No. 62 Nieminen leads their head-to-head series 3-2 and won their most recent match in Brisbane at the start of the year.
