For a place in the third round of the Australian Open, Marcos will take on Spanish No. 17 seed David Ferrer on Wednesday at Melbourne Park.
World No. 18 Ferrer had very little trouble in his first-round match on Monday; winning 14 straight games to establish a 6-0, 6-0, 2-0 lead over Frederico Gil before the Portuguese player was forced to retire.
The 27-year-old Ferrer had limited preparation coming into the Australian Open, playing just one match as he bowed out in his opening-round match at the Heineken Open in Auckland in the first week of the season. The Spaniard closed 2009 on a high note, though, winning two rubbers to assist his country to the Davis Cup title against Czech Republic.
Ferrer has posted consistently solid results at the Australian Open in recent years, highlighted by a quarter-final effort in 2008. Last year he lost to Marin Cilic in the third round.
Find out more about Ferrer by checking his ATP profile.
Marcos will be looking for his first win over Ferrer, having lost to the Javea native in both their two previous meetings. Ferrer won in straight sets in Cincinnati in 2006, and again in Johannesburg last year. Riding a six-match winning streak, though, Marcos will be optimistic of better success in their third clash.
