Cyprus will face Portugal in a first round clash in Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone II this weekend. The draw for the tie was made today and, as Cyprus’ No. 1 player, Marcos will be second out on court against World No. 129 Rui Machado.
Photos Kallias will open the tie for the hosts on Friday afternoon in Nicosia, but faces a tough task against Frederico Gil – who is ranked 465 places higher at No. 81 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings. Marcos will then take a 30-3 Davis Cup singles record into his first-time meeting with Machado.
In Saturday’s crucial doubles rubber, Marcos will join forces with Kallias as the Cypriot pair takes on Gil and Leonardo Tavares. The reverse singles will then be contested on Sunday with Marcos up first against Gil, whom he has not played before, followed by Kallias against Machado.
Play gets underway at 3pm in the National Tennis Centre, Nicosia.
